Harris County
Epoxy Floor Coatings in Tomball, TX
Tomball is far enough northwest that the ground under it is not the Beaumont clay most of this site talks about. There is a USDA soil series named after the town, and its defining characteristic is poor drainage — which is a moisture question before it is a concrete one.
Slab conditions
What we find under Tomball garages
These are the conditions that actually change the specification here, rather than generic copy with a city name swapped in.
The soil series is literally called Tomball
The USDA maintains an official soil series named Tomball: loamy deposits derived from the Willis Formation, found in open-ended depressions on the inland coastal plain, and described as poorly drained and very slowly permeable. Where a garage sits on ground like that, water does not leave quickly, and what we care about is whether it is finding its way up through the slab.
Conditions change street to street up here
Northwest Harris County surface geology is older than the Beaumont clay nearer the coast, and sandy and clayey deposits interleave across short distances. That is genuinely different from the uniform clay further south: two houses a few streets apart can sit on noticeably different ground. It is the main reason we will not quote a Tomball floor from a description over the phone.
Town lots and acreage are different jobs
Tomball was still a town of about 12,000 at the 2020 census, with newer subdivisions around a small historic core and acreage properties beyond it. An attached two-car garage and a detached shop on a few acres are not the same project: the shop is usually a larger pour, often with no vapor barrier under it, and sometimes has never had a finished floor at all.
Why we quote Tomball slabs onsite
Moisture is the first thing we test in Tomball and the thing most likely to change the specification. Poorly drained ground and slow permeability mean vapor drive is a live possibility rather than a box to tick, and a coating applied over a slab that is still passing moisture will fail regardless of how well it was ground. Where a moisture problem shows up we say so and explain the options — we will not quietly coat over it.
Questions
Asked by Tomball homeowners
Is the soil in Tomball different from the rest of Houston?
Generally yes. Most of our service area sits on Beaumont Formation clay; northwest Harris County surfaces are older deposits, and there is a USDA soil series named Tomball that is poorly drained and very slowly permeable. What it means practically is that moisture under the slab deserves more attention here, not that your floor cannot be coated.
Can you coat a detached shop or barn floor, not just a garage?
Yes, and it is a common request on acreage out this way. A shop slab is usually bigger, more likely to have been poured without a vapor barrier, and may have heavier equipment on it — so the system we specify and the return-to-service time can differ from a house garage. It is quoted after we have seen it.
How do you know what my slab is sitting on?
We test rather than look it up. Published soil mapping tells us what to expect in an area, but it does not tell us about your slab, so moisture testing at the inspection is what actually decides the specification. The NRCS Web Soil Survey will show the mapped series for your address if you are curious before we arrive.
