Are DIY epoxy garage floor kits worth it?
Short answer
A consumer kit can produce a reasonable short-term finish on sound concrete, but the gap is preparation rather than resin. Kits rely on acid etching instead of mechanical grinding, so the coating bonds to the slab’s weak surface layer. That is the leading cause of peeling, and it is not something a better application technique compensates for.

The honest case for a kit
If your slab is genuinely sound, you have realistic expectations, and the goal is to make a garage look better for a few years at low cost, a consumer kit is not a scam. Plenty of people are satisfied with one.
What a kit cannot do is change what it is bonded to. That is the whole argument, and it is worth understanding before you spend a weekend on it.
Why acid etching is the weak point
Kits specify acid etching because grinding requires a planetary grinder and dust extraction that no homeowner owns. Etching chemically roughens the top of the slab’s closed surface layer without removing it.
A coating bonded to that layer inherits its weakness. When it fails it tends to lift in sheets with clean concrete underneath — the signature of a bond failure rather than a worn-out coating.
The cost that is easy to miss
A failed DIY coating does not simply wear away. It has to be mechanically removed before a professional system can be installed, and removal is its own line item.
So the comparison is not always kit price against professional price. Sometimes it is kit price plus removal plus professional price, against professional price alone.
